Frequently Asked Questions
Why use our services?

Top four reasons to use our 3D / 4D services:

       1. Clear images
> Experienced, ARDMS board certified sonographers
> State-of-the art equipment
       2. Comfortable environment and friendly staff
       3. Affordable, Best value package
       4. A professional "medical" ultrasound scan on a fetal photo budget

How far along should I be before I have a gender determination or 3D / 4D fetal ultrasound?

We recommend waiting until you are at least 15 weeks before you come in for your gender determination.

We recommend having your 3D / 4D fetal ultrasound performed after the 25th week of your pregnancy.

When should I book my 3D / 4D fetal ultrasound appointment?

We recommend you book your appointment in advance as our appointments do tend to book up quickly, especially on evenings and Saturdays. We provide these appointment times especially for you to enjoy your baby when your family and friends are typically off work. Because of this, we ask that you kindly give us 24-hour notice of cancellation or rescheduling to avoid a cancellation/no-show fee. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this policy.

What makes your services different than other service providers?

All of our ultrasound sonographers not only have extensive OB education and experience, but they are also ARDMS nationally board certified. This means they not only have years of experience, but they have also completed years of thorough training and examinations to obtain certification. We have gone above and beyond other service providers so that the families that come to us will receive the best care and images that an ultrasound facility can provide.

Who performs the ultrasounds?

Our staff is highly trained and certified by the ARDMS. Our ultrasound sonographers have years of experience in High Risk OB scanning, and extensive 3D-4D fetal ultrasound experience as well.  Our physicians, who read the studies when needed, are all board certified medical doctors.

Will my 3D ultrasound images always turn out the way I expect?

Usually, but sometimes if the baby is persistently looking away from us, or if hands and feet are in the way it may be difficult to see the baby's face. Issues that can make the images less than perfect are:

  • the amount of fluid around the area of interest
  • fuller-figured mothers-to-be
  • age of the fetus
  • the baby's activity level
  • fetal position

However, we do our very best to get the best images of your baby!  Each baby will scan differently, and we can make no promises that the images will always meet your expectations. We do promise, however to do everything we can to get the very best images possible.  If the images are considered unacceptable by both the parents and the sonograher, we allow you to return at a later date for a "re-do" at NO CHARGE.

Do you offer Gender Determination?

Yes, we offer a gender determination package. However, we cannot make guarantees that your little one will cooperate with us, but we can guarantee we will make every effort to determine the gender of your child.  But again, we offer a "re-do" at a later date at NO CHARGE if we are unable to determine the sex upon your initial visit.

What if I DON'T want to know the gender of my child?

When this is the wish of your family, we accommodate with no questions asked. We simply stay away from that area of your child, and focus on other areas, such as face, hands, arms, feet etc. Just let us know your wishes and we would be happy to hide the gender for you!

Can I use my insurance for 3D / 4D elective ultrasound?

Because this is an elective ultrasound scan and not something that is required for your prenatal care, your insurance usually will not cover cost of the 3D / 4D fetal gender determination ultrasound sessions. Therefore, this will be an out of pocket expense. For your convenience, we accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, and debit cards. Also our gift certificate makes a very unique, creative baby shower gift bag for you!

Question:  What is Medical Ultrasound?

Answer:
Ultrasound imaging is a common diagnostic medical procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to produce dynamic images (sonograms) of unborn babies, organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body.  Prenatal ultrasound examinations are performed by trained professionals such as sonographers, radiologists, obstetricians, or vascular surgeons.  The process involves using a transducer which sends a stream of high frequency, harmless sound waves into the body and detects their echoes as they bounce off internal structures.  The sound waves are then converted inside the computer to electric impulses which are processed to form an image displayed on a computer monitor.  It is from these images that videos and portraits are made.

Obstetricians use ultrasound at a very low power level to check the size, location, number, and age of fetuses, the presence of potential birth defects, fetal movement, breathing, and heartbeat.  As long as the ultrasound procedure is performed by a qualified clinician to check for this kind of medical information, the FDA says the medical benefits FAR outweigh any possible risks.  (Reprinted from the FDA.)

Question:  What is 3D Ultrasound?

Answer:
In the past, ultrasounds (sonograms) were viewed on monitors in “2D” (two dimensions).  Then, medical scientists and computer programmers put their heads together and came up with computer hardware and software that produces “3D” (three-dimensional) images.  Advanced software analyzes data from the ultrasound probe (called a transducer) and generates vivid three dimensional color images.  As far as ultrasound imaging is concerned, 3D and 4D ultrasound are the latest technology available in medical science and is exclusive to advanced General Electric (GE) imaging equipment or their OEM subcontractors.

Question:  What is 4D Ultrasound?

Answer:
4D ultrasound takes three-dimensional ultrasound images and adds the element of time and motion to the process.  The result is “live action” or video images of your unborn child.  Accuscan’s ultrasound specialists use GE Voluson imaging equipment exclusively.  In other words, a 4D ultrasound is a DVD video of your unborn baby's entire ultrasound scan session to keep for your family, friends, and posterity.

Question:  Is 3D/4D ultrasound safe?

Answer:
Yes, 3D and 4D ultrasound utilizes sound waves to take a safe peek inside the body.  The technology originated from harmless U.S. Navy underwater sonar.  A sonographer places a probe on the mother’s tummy, which emits sound waves into the abdomen.  The sound waves bounce off the tissue and organs and return an echo to the probe.  The computer captures the echo and generates an image on the screen.  Extensive studies over 45+ years have concluded that ultrasound has not been shown to have any harmful effects on the mother or the baby.  Your 3D/4D fetal ultrasound session utilizes the same technology as the medical 2D scan.  All of our elective scans are limited to 10-30 minutes which is well within the time frame that has been proven safe for nearly half a century!
